According to a new Berg Insight report - Connected Navigation Devices - 2007 is likely to be remembered as the year of major reshaping of the personal navigation industry.

In Europe, the PND segment achieved a breakthrough in 2005 and gained mass-market acceptance in 2006, with sales reaching nine million units. This is forecast to increase to sixteen million units in 2007.

In North America, strong sales during the holiday season contributed to remarkable growth in 2006, to about 2.8 million units shipped. This is forecast to reach roughly 6.5 million in 2007.

Along with more GPS handsets being launched in Europe by major vendors, fast adoption of navigation services for handsets can be expected as well. Berg Insight estimates that sales of PNDs in Europe will rise by a compound annual growth rate of almost 23% to reach 31 million units in 2012.

There are already more than three million subscribers to navigation services for mobile phones in North America. Here, the competition from low cost in-dash systems and mobile phone navigation services is higher, and PND shipments are expected to rise by a CAGR of almost 20% to reach 22 million units in 2012.

However, 2007 is more likely to be remembered as the year of major reshaping of the personal navigation industry, with major consolidation in the form of Nokia’s acquisition of NAVTEQ, and TomTom and Garmin outbidding each other for Tele Atlas.
