According to a new Berg Insight report - Mobile location-based services - European LBS revenues are forecast to reach about €421 million in 2012, and almost €1.82 billion if you include location-based tariffs for data and voice calls.Several important drivers are finally about to bring a breakthrough for LBS in Europe.
Mobile penetration is reaching saturation, intensified competition and regulations are driving call prices down, the performance and features of new handsets is gradually improving, coverage of high speed 3G networks in improving, and the availability of reasonably priced flat rate data plans has increased.
EU E112 regulations - mandating location of emergency callers - have prompted operators to install positioning technology in their networks, more and more operators are opening their platforms to third party developers and location aggregators, more manufacturers are launching a growing number of handset models, and more new services are being introduced.
